Would you hurt me if I said I hate Apple Products?

would-you-hurt-me-if-i-said-i-hate-apple-products

I’m not going into why, but iPads, iPhones and iPods not too mention any actual Mac would be in serious danger of being beaten up with a baseball bat in my presence. In my eyes the ubiquitous apple should have horns and a stingy tail not a chunk bitten out of it.  Anyhoo…

That didn’t stop me from wanting to make one of these iPhone Covers in Janelle Wind’s book “Pieces of Me”. There is a beautiful one in Janelle’s header and here is a link to another gorgeous one made by Bloom.

So we all know I am a bit of a dumb arse right?!

Right, well then it wouldn’t surprise you that I tried this 3 times before I was happy with it :(

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers from her Pieces of Me Book - Attempt 1 and Attempt 2

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers from her Pieces of Me Book - Attempt 1 and Attempt 2

Attempt 1

First off I read 3 and 3/4 inches, but I cut 4 and 3/4 inches, so I was off to a great start!

I forgot entirely to cut a square of fabric for the pocket lining (yes… clear as day in the instructions!)

I sewed my pocket onto the front piece with right sides facing, when it was supposed to be with the wrong side facing the right side.

I tried to make a frill using the method Janelle suggests but me and my bobbin threads, we aren’t friends… so I pleated instead.

It looks wonky, it is wonky… and I didnt’ like it.

Attempt 2

Slightly different mayhem to attempt 1

I repeated the dumb arse move with the pocket as per above… way to go learning from your mistakes Q!

Then when I ‘fixed’ it, I actually attached the frill to the wrong end, so the peeper bits (in attempt 2 they are the dotty fabric) so instead of pointing down they point up?!

The frill… still not friends with my bobbin threads :(

Also a bit wonky

I finally (on my third attempt) made one I am happy with (I am still not pleased that it will probably hold an Apple product, but Cest La Vie nou?

I ended up hand stitching the frill to get it right, and did not make most of the other goobie errors I made the first two times, my third time.

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers Attempt 3

Janelle Wind Ipod Cover Attempt 3

I still don’t know what is up with my camera, when I expect no flash (like above) it flashed and when I expect it to (like below) it doesn’t!

I’ve still been ill… so more and more hand stitching… I have been at my hexies for the Vignette Hexagon Quilt for a while now, but I also had one other hexie project (a little one!) that I wanted to try.  It’s the Hexagon Purse Pattern by The BirdHouse (link takes you to pattern  item at Cookies and Cream Craft).  The suggested size of hexies are 3/4 inch, but I have some 1/2 inch papers so thought I would try that.

Just so you know, I had not read about Myrtie until just before I posted this… You need to see her work here at Loft Creations!

Half Inch Hexies Nearly All Stitched Together

Half Inch Hexies Nearly All Stitched Together

That is a 6 by 6 inch cutting board but that is all I need for the pattern, so should have a finished product to show soon!

I have 48 completed hexagon flowers of the 140 required for the Vignette Hexagon Quilt. When I see all the pretty Hexies on the Vignette Hexagon Quilt blog I am really drawn to the fantastic colour coordinated ones.  My flowers are so far scrappy and I keep wanting to start over.  I have a serious scrappy fear I think…  Do you prefer scraps or colour coordinated lines?

The gaps will have white hexies with teeny stitcheries on them… here they are our lounge room rug.  Maybe when I get further down the track I can remove some of my scariest scraps and replace them with less scary ones?

Good Night Stitchers, where ever you are!

Birch Product Coolness

birch-product-coolness

I just got this groovy stuff today that I thought I would show, just in case you didn’t know they existed, I certainly didn’t!

Birch Cone Thread Holder (product code (012205))
I have read a lot on blogs about people hacking cones and using all sorts of hand made contraptions so that they can use overlocker cone thread on their sewing machines.  I got this for $2.99AUD at my local craft supply store Spotlight that is the normal price, not on sale. It may not be pretty but not a lot around my sewing area is anyway.

Birch Embroidery Floss Winder

This winder was $2.15AUD also the regular price.  I may not be so cluey when it comes to things like this, but I thought it was kinda cool, particularly since its also super cheap!

Edging Toward my Endless Summer

edging-toward-my-endless-summer

I received my Endless Summer pattern on Tuesday from Quilt Taffy which was marvellous, since it gives me plenty of time to get this month’s Le Petite project completed.  It was my birthday on Friday last week [unfortunately the day of the Earthquake :( ], it was also a public holiday on Monday here in South Australia, so I had a long weekend.  I pretty much got sent to craft heaven for my birthday. My mum had ordered, (and I already received), the Lecien Basics Fat Quarters I need for the Vignette Mystery Quilt, she also ordered the Sweet Broderie Fat Quarters and the Cosmo threads, they were posted on the 10th March and should arrive in Australia soon from the States.

Lecien Basics for Vignette

A close family friend got me a voucher at Spotlight (my local craft department store), which I got the supplies I needed for the Sleepy Sheep Cot Quilt I am going to make for my niece, some stash fabric, a container to store embroidery floss and a yoyo maker. My cousin and his wife slipped some cash into a card, which went toward a free motion quilting class I am attending in June with Rachel Denneny at Patchwork by Sea (my local patchwork store). My brother ordered this for me from Quilt Fabric Delights (another local quilt store)

Pieces of Me by Janelle Wind

He also ordered 5-10-15+ Fat Quarters by Leanne Stauffer and Elisa Sims Albury and The Practical Guide to Patchwork:  New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker by Elizabeth Hartman, they will be delivered later as were ordered from sellers abroad; and he got me a gift voucher for The Fat Quarter Shop which will also be delivered later.  I was waiting to get paid (today) so that I could take advantage of the 20% off offer at the Fat Quarter Shop detailed in this post (also still time for you to sign up for a giveaway!) at Spun Sugar Quilts, but then I got an email about a sale at Pink Chalk Fabrics last night, with some crazy specials on fabric I adore, so I got myself 7 yards in total, including 10 Fat Quarters from Chrysalis, 2 yards of 2 different Sweet Broderie Fabrics and half yards on some other yummies.

So soon Mr Postman, will be bringing me 2 new books, 7 yards of fabric and a gift voucher so I can buy even more fabric! It will feel like my birthday for ages :D

Erm, so yeah I was supposed to be talking about Endless Summer?! after getting the pattern on Tuesday I decided that I would use my Sugar Pop charm packs (I was saving them for a Moda Bakeshop project, but will buy some others for that project instead.) and cut them out.  I had to have some medical tests done on Tuesday, the line to get them done was horrendous and I wandered over to my local Janome dealer centre I had never been in there and didn’t even realise that they sold fabrics! My little niece (who is 20 months old) loves Spot and reads Spot books before bedtime most nights with either her mum or dad.  She knows all the books by heart already but isn’t able to say Spot properly, so in our house his name is Fot. So when I saw this Fot’s Favourite Colours Panel in the Janome store I just had to buy it!

"Fot's" Favourite Colours Panel

I will be cutting it up and making a little fabric book.

Oh yeah.. Endless Summer, so I cut all the bits out, I am always surprised at how teeny the piles of pieces look for Le Petite Projects, it never looks enough for a project even at a small size. Here are the pieces cut out (without the background and sashing fabric)

I assumed I would start piecing when I got home from work on Wednesday but I was again a bit flat and spent the night in front of the telly in bed (I did make my very first hexie flower but I am going to unpick part of it, so will show and tell about that another day).  Instead I started sewing Endless Summer tonight.  I did all the half square triangles and started on my first star block, then I ran out of bobbin thread (and patience) after realising that I was going to need a bit more brain power than I have left in reserve for the day to continue.  So I put it aside and will continue over the weekend, when I have all my faculties at my disposal.

I’m in a Parade :) and a Stash Update

im-in-a-parade-and-a-stash-update

So, remember the Mon Ami Schnibble I was working on? – I finished the top (well sans borders) it has yet to be quilted, but was what I wanted to do during January because of the Le Petite or Year of Schnibbles Project Hosted by both Sinta on her blog Pink Pincushion and Sherri on her blog A Quilting Life

So on the 1st of the Month, everyone who participated project is paraded on each of their blogs and this month I am proud to be one of the parade!

Here is the post on Sinta’s Blog for the Mon Ami Schnibble Parade 1st Feb 2o11  (I’m in this one – about half way down the post yay!)

Here is the post on Sherri’s Blog – as you can see one pattern can have a life of its own.

As you know I am not the speediest of sewers/quilters, but I did get a start on Miss Perkins, but she is not quite ready for a parade just yet.  I tried to attach her legs without a doll needle and was not happy with the results so will be getting that today. Miss Perkins also doesn’t have a mane, tail or eyes just yet.  But with the Rosalie Quinlan Fabric Collection by Lecien Fabrics Grandmother’s Flower Garden, she is quite the Melly and Me child isn’t she?

-Note to self – Iron On Interfacing does not work well as a photo background he he he :D

I also got some stash additions yesterday, want to see?

Whoop Whoop! This arrived yesterday from my mum’s latest Fat Quarter Shop purchase ( I snuck some stuff in there!) and will be use to make the wonderful Stella Handbag pattern by Patty Young!

and speaking of Patty Young and Michael Miller Fabrics, I also added these 8 fat quarters to the stash! – They are not ear marked for anything just yet, but I can’t to have a ‘date’ with them.

And last but definitely not least, my local discount craft store Spotlight has a sale on that started yesterday so I grabbed two of these 25 X 2.5 inch strip rolls which equal one ‘jelly’ roll and are also not yet assigned to a project.

Groovy Hostess Apron – As a Quick to Sew Christmas Pressie (Part 1)

groovy-hostess-apron-as-a-quick-to-sew-christmas-pressie-part-1

My sister-in-law loves to bake and is very good at it so I thought a cute apron would be a great craft gift for her, that I would like to accompany by a matching apron for my niece so that she can have one like mum mum has.

Groovy Hostess Apron Tutorial - Free at Sew4Home

Groovy Hostess Apron Tutorial - Free at Sew4Home

I found this awesome free pattern and tutorial at Sew4Home, it is really clear and simple to follow, and I finished it in a few hours and am very happy with the results!

Here is the Tutorial - Groovy Hostess Apron

There are some great tutorials and projects on the site, that I would like to do, the next one I will be attempting is part 2 of the Christmas Present which will be my niece’s matching apron.  Her’s comes from a different pattern but because I am making it in the same fabric, they will match and I hope they both like their gift.

I am still learning to sew and I am very impatient by nature so I did make a few mistakes, but they worked out ok. The problem I had was related to not reading the instructions… (go Q! he he he) so my waistband and ties are slightly different but not noticably I don’t think.  The pattern uses straight stitching in some cases and I used diagonal because I thought it would look good.

Here is my attempt:

I think the fabric range is called Apple Orchard, I purchased it from Spotlight.

I used diagonal stitching here to addd the pocket, the tutorial uses edge stitching, my edge stitching is not so straight, so I think that this stitch is friendlier for me.

Cheap Pierrot or Clown Costume – Step by Step Instructions and Tips

cheap-pierrot-or-clown-costume-step-by-step-instructions-and-tips

I am still working on this post, if you are interested in any of the detail get in touch and ask me :)

Pierrot Costume Accessories

Pierrot Costume Accessories

What you need:

  • Silver Tinsel Wig (optional) – I got mine at Spotlight, other novelty and perhaps $2 shops would also have them. Mine was on sale for 50% and cost $2.50
  • Silver Tinsel Wig

    Silver Tinsel Wig

  • Black and White Felt Remnants
  • Black and White Material Remnants
  • 1 Pack of 5mm diameter black Pom Poms (1o in Pack) – I bought them for $1.99 at Spotlight, but you could also make them from spare wool or get them from your local craft or discount shop.
  • 1 Pack of 5mm diameter white Pom Poms (10 in Pack) – I bought them for $1.99 at Spotlight, but you could also make them from spare wool or get them from your local craft or discount shop.
  • a black or white head band – an alice band shape (the one that is shaped like a horseshoe not a noose)
  • White face Paint  (optional)- I bought some for $5.99 at Spotlight for 40ml
  • black eyeliner (it needs to be reasonably easy to write with on your skin without gouging yourself)
  • various bright coloured eyeshadows and lipstick (I used red face paint crayon, but you can use lipstick- and I used my mums lavender eyeshadow, not that I don’t have lavender eyeshadow or that it’s a mum thing, just that I was at her house when painting.)
  • Tights (optional) - I purchased checked diamond harlequin black and white tights from a costume store for $14.99 – but you can modify plain black tights.
  • Spare Wire any comfortable guage (pipe cleaners may work) – Mine are around 18 guage wire that I use to practise wire work for beading and wire work jewellery
  • Wire Cutters (to cut the wires – you can use scissors, but may never be able to cut super straight with the scissors again, your call!)
  • I had a black tulle skirt I borrowed, but you could use any black skirt
  • Needle and Thread ( I just used white polyester thread)
  • Measuring Tape or Ruler
  • Scissors for cutting Material and Paper
  • Ribbon or Elastic
  • Plain Black or Plain White Top

Maximum Cost of Costume with all Options – $27.50

Wear a plain Black or Plain White Top and contrast your Accessories Accordingly.

Disclaimers and Stuff
I didn’t injure myself making or wearing my costume, I guess it’s safe for you, but I am not really offering any guarantees, if you are unsure or have doubts about any of it, don’t do it!  I am writing this from memory, and most of the bits and pieces fell apart already now, but it lasted on the day and that was what mattered.

Making your Felt Pierrot Hat

Pierrot Felt Hat

Pierrot Felt Hat

- Piece of Paper for Template (about A4 size)
- 3 to 4 Pom Poms (alternating colours)
- Black and White Felt Remnants
- Needle and Thread

  1. Fold your piece of Paper into a Party Hat Shape by twisting it into a cone and sticking the edges together (I used masking tape) anything will do (pins, paper clips, sticky tape, blue tack, etc)
  2. Put it on your head to check the size is ok
  3. Mark the length of the Hat on the paper so that the hat will be the height you want.
  4. Take Paper off your Head, Fold Flat and Cut a Straight Line Across the bottom.
  5. Recheck the size of the hat on your head.
  6. Fold Flat Again, Folding the hat Flat will effectively give you the template for cutting out the Felt. It looks like an elongated diamond in shape, but does actually end up being a cone shaped hat!
  7. Cut one of black and one of white of the template adding a comfortable 0.5 to 1cm onto each edge for the seam allowance (ie. don’t cut on the line of the template, instead cut outside the line at a consistent distance around the entire edge.
  8. Pin and Stitch the template together on the height sides (where black is meeting white felt) and hem the plain coloured sides (don’t stitch together your head goes in there!)
  9. Attach Alternating coloured pom poms down the adjoining colour seam on the front of the hat
  10. Attach your hat to your head band – I used wire, you can use, thread, masking tape, etc… whatever works.
  11. Et Voila – one Pierrot Hat

Pierrot Jewellery
Various Pom Poms
Wire
Wire Cutters

  1. String Alternating Pom Poms onto Wire Shaped as a bangle. Tie wire and Wear as a Bangle
  2. String Alternating Pom Poms onto Straight Wire – Attach Wire to Existing Earings to wear as earrings – I actually bent the wires into ear wires and stuck them directly in my ear, but I would really not reccommend them, just in case you have sensitive ears, or the wire has burs on it or all sorts of very good health and safety reasons.
  3. String Alternating Pom Poms onto Wire and use as a Necklace Pendant
  4. (The leftovers from the earrings can be seen in the main photo above)

Pierrot Top (and Tights or Pants)
Scraps of White and Black Material
Needle and Thread

  1. Measure the circumference of your arm, midway between your shoulder and elbow (use a tape measure, if you don’t have one, use a piece of material, a scarf or a belt, ensure you know where the start and end meets on your arm then lay it flat and measure with a ruler instead)
  2. Cut 2 lengths of ribbon or elastic to the length you measured in step 1 + 30cm (if using the ribbon)
  3. Cut the scraps of material into Squares (mine were around the size of a CD case) – I cut 4 Squares of White and 4 squares of Black
  4. Cut the squares in half along the diagonal into Triangles
  5. Stitch half the Triangles into a Strip along the Strips that are not pointed, alternating white and black. (Should have 8 triangles in a row)
  6. Repeat step 5 with the rest of the Triangles
  7. Gather the strip onto your elastic for ribbon so that it covers the area that will go around your arm.
  8. Sew the gathered strip to the elastic  or ribbon
  9. Stitch into a circle for the elastic (if using ribbon you will tie it to your arm)
  10. If your plain top has long sleeves you can repeat this at the top and bottom of your sleeves
  11. If you have plain tights or pants instead of a purchased chequered pair repeat this so that you also have a pair to attach to the bottom edge of footless tights or around mid calf to your pants or full length tights.

First Play with a Clay Extruder

first-play-with-a-clay-extruder
Makins Clay Extruder

Makins Clay Extruder

So… I have been doing a lot of research, yesterday I was going to buy a cheap pasta maker from Big W ( a large discount department store in Australia, not sure what the equivalent would be elsewhere). There’s go for around $25AUD ( a good price here!).  I went and they had sold out and the display model didn’t have a handle. Then I thought I would go to Spotlight ( a large craft, curtain and home decor store) as they were having a 20% off sale. They do not stock a lot of clay or modelling supplies (Sculpey III, some Sculpey Kits and moulds and a Renoir Extruder ~$30AUD) I played with lots of beads in the chuckouts, but ended up walking out of the store with nothing.

Then I went to a store near me that stocks Clay Supplies called Adelaide Moulding and Casting Supplies, I would see what they had a buy a few things. There website has a good range and decent prices (though going into the store does cost slightly more than buying online and getting things delivered).  I saw the Makins Ultimate Extruder out of my price range got some Mini Geo Cutters and a very cheap plastic extruder ($13AUD). Now I had read about not getting a plastic extruder, the pressure you need is too great, if you really want yada yada yada… Check out Eugenia’s good comments Here where she describes that she bought a plastic one and the first time she used it, it broke. I thought hey, it’s $13 I’ll get one have a play if I like it I can save up for a metal one yeah?

I got home, started reading tutorials on what to do with them. Noticed lots of photos of people adding all sorts of contraptions to their makins ultimate extruder (not the one I got!) so that it would be easier to extrude, but forged ahead full of eager eyed optimism. I started out chosing a colour pallete I liked, mixing my clays and making sliced stacks so that I could try the Retro Cane, which though simple is kinda cute and effective. With a lot of effort and straining and grunting, that I am not sure would have sounded at all pleasant to anyone who heard it I did manage to get most of a barrel extruded. I tried following a pillow bead tutorial with it, without much success and then I smooshed the pillow beads up thinking maybe I would try Balinese Filigree instead, that is really pretty. So I refilled the barrel (well not all the way, I’m not a complete masochist) this time I grabbed some foam handles from wrist exercisers and used them to help me push the plunger down and BINGO… one of the wings snapped. LOL!  See proof in photo above.

So if I decide I would really like to do retro canes or filigree or anything else I come across that requires a clay extruder, I will save up and get a good one, as they say (yes over and over and over) and I didn’t listen, don’t get a plastic one!
