Inspired Stitches 2011 (Eye Candy Post!)

inspired-stitches-2011-eye-candy-post

Just after the Cabaret and quilting class and big uni assignments and exams, I serendipitously signed up to attend a Day (or two) of Inspired Stitches, an annual weekend stitching retreat convened by Sarah of Quilt Fabric Delights.  The retreat is held at Westminster School, close to where I live and features two days of stitching with and hints and tips from guest designers.  This year’s designers were Janelle Wind, Helen Stubbings, Natalie Ross and Gail Pan.

I made a bit of a fool of myself by gushing uncontrollably to Janelle about how I adore her and I am a total Janelle Wind Groupie and could she please sign my book and could I please have a photo… So very tragic, but she dealt with my total mad fan attack fabulously :D

It was pouring with rain outside, which made it a fabulous day to be stitching and made the already beautiful colours and fabrics on the designers’ stands even more sublime.  We sat in tables of 7 and there were attendants from all over Australia.

I didn’t get a separate photo of Gail Pan’s stand, but you can see a bit of it on the right of the pic above, another stitcher was drooling over it for a long time… and I didn’t want to disturb them :D

I had the great joy of sitting with and meeting 6 other lovely sewing afficionados (3 of whom are fellow bloggers) and to mingle with other like minds.  We all got some quality time with each designer a goodie bag to start our day and patterns and instructions for designs for projects from all the designers.  Our table (number 7… lucky number 7!) was indeed lucky with 5 of us winning a prize on the day. Unfortunately I wasn’t one of them, but I whined about it (as I am want to do) enough.

I only attended on day 1, and hope to definitely attend again next  year, and this time for both days.

Here is a photo of the stitchers on our table.  They are Karan, Kris, Pip, Julie, Bec and Danielle, I really enjoyed their company and hope to be able to catch up with them again next year!

Now, Ally took the photo 3 times at my request (thank you!!), and I think this is the one with the least closed eyes or strange looks, but not so much for Kris, who is a mum of 8 and a grand mum to 2 and really wonderful (yes I did say 8!).  So here is a special crop of Kris, from one of the other photos :)

I managed to not be too hindered by my own yacking, and completed the stitching of the birdcage, here is mine resting on my Finishing Kit full of yummy.

I picked up lots of tips from both the stitchers at the table and the designers and am hoping to try a method of needle turn appliqué soon courtesy of Helen Stubbings, that may not be as daunting as the traditional way.

Our goodie bags, contained skeins of embroidery threads, fabric and thread to commence the projects and the entire requirements for Natalie Ross’s gorgeous little sunglass holder, back issues of magazines and a pack of coordinating fat eighths.

So now I have plenty of little projects to play with and complete in addition to my current to do list!

Edging Toward my Endless Summer

edging-toward-my-endless-summer

I received my Endless Summer pattern on Tuesday from Quilt Taffy which was marvellous, since it gives me plenty of time to get this month’s Le Petite project completed.  It was my birthday on Friday last week [unfortunately the day of the Earthquake :( ], it was also a public holiday on Monday here in South Australia, so I had a long weekend.  I pretty much got sent to craft heaven for my birthday. My mum had ordered, (and I already received), the Lecien Basics Fat Quarters I need for the Vignette Mystery Quilt, she also ordered the Sweet Broderie Fat Quarters and the Cosmo threads, they were posted on the 10th March and should arrive in Australia soon from the States.

A close family friend got me a voucher at Spotlight (my local craft department store), which I got the supplies I needed for the Sleepy Sheep Cot Quilt I am going to make for my niece, some stash fabric, a container to store embroidery floss and a yoyo maker. My cousin and his wife slipped some cash into a card, which went toward a free motion quilting class I am attending in June with Rachel Denneny at Patchwork by Sea (my local patchwork store). My brother ordered this for me from Quilt Fabric Delights (another local quilt store)

He also ordered 5-10-15+ Fat Quarters by Leanne Stauffer and Elisa Sims Albury and The Practical Guide to Patchwork:  New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker by Elizabeth Hartman, they will be delivered later as were ordered from sellers abroad; and he got me a gift voucher for The Fat Quarter Shop which will also be delivered later.  I was waiting to get paid (today) so that I could take advantage of the 20% off offer at the Fat Quarter Shop detailed in this post (also still time for you to sign up for a giveaway!) at Spun Sugar Quilts, but then I got an email about a sale at Pink Chalk Fabrics last night, with some crazy specials on fabric I adore, so I got myself 7 yards in total, including 10 Fat Quarters from Chrysalis, 2 yards of 2 different Sweet Broderie Fabrics and half yards on some other yummies.

So soon Mr Postman, will be bringing me 2 new books, 7 yards of fabric and a gift voucher so I can buy even more fabric! It will feel like my birthday for ages :D

Erm, so yeah I was supposed to be talking about Endless Summer?! after getting the pattern on Tuesday I decided that I would use my Sugar Pop charm packs (I was saving them for a Moda Bakeshop project, but will buy some others for that project instead.) and cut them out.  I had to have some medical tests done on Tuesday, the line to get them done was horrendous and I wandered over to my local Janome dealer centre I had never been in there and didn’t even realise that they sold fabrics! My little niece (who is 20 months old) loves Spot and reads Spot books before bedtime most nights with either her mum or dad.  She knows all the books by heart already but isn’t able to say Spot properly, so in our house his name is Fot. So when I saw this Fot’s Favourite Colours Panel in the Janome store I just had to buy it!

I will be cutting it up and making a little fabric book.

Oh yeah.. Endless Summer, so I cut all the bits out, I am always surprised at how teeny the piles of pieces look for Le Petite Projects, it never looks enough for a project even at a small size. Here are the pieces cut out (without the background and sashing fabric)

I assumed I would start piecing when I got home from work on Wednesday but I was again a bit flat and spent the night in front of the telly in bed (I did make my very first hexie flower but I am going to unpick part of it, so will show and tell about that another day).  Instead I started sewing Endless Summer tonight.  I did all the half square triangles and started on my first star block, then I ran out of bobbin thread (and patience) after realising that I was going to need a bit more brain power than I have left in reserve for the day to continue.  So I put it aside and will continue over the weekend, when I have all my faculties at my disposal.

Applique and Quilting

applique-and-quilting

I’m still hunting for work at the moment, so have been busy with that, but I have also been playing around with needles and my sewing machine.

I purchased this kit a long time ago (I believe it was the Adelaide Craft and Quilt Fair in November 2008!) from the Quilt Fabric Delights stand.

Finally here is the outcome!

Mum had a bag full of novelty buttons which made things much easier as it had a large range of colourful little flowers which worked well with the design.  I did initially attempt to do the applique with the machine, but I am still not comfortable sewing around curves and this had plenty of them so I did them all by hand.

Here is a bigger view where you can clearly see I have not ironed it yet :) Some of the applique was 3d so the flowers or leaves had their own backing fabric and were only attached by the button for the flowers or a corner for the leaves.  I am thinking about using this as a pocket panel on a over the shoulder bag or a cushion, what do you think?

The other thing I did, was finally safety pin baste a quilt top I finished at least a year ago, but never started quilting.  It is a pattern called barn raising log cabin which I got from a book on Amish Quilting. The Amish style is very reserved and only had 2 or 3 colours in it, but I chose to turn mine into a rainbow pattern.  I pinned it a couple of weeks ago, but have not started quilting it yet. I am a little scared about it as I have not yet quilted a project so large. Wish me luck!

MIA ?!

I’ve been missing a while looking for work in the real world so I have been distracted from the usual stuff…

I have just made a little dolly from a pattern by One Red Robin – I sourced my pattern from Quilt Fabric Delights – the store is online but owned and operated by an Adelaide local who occasionally has open days.  I like their choice of stocks and fabrics.

Here is my little Chibi Doll – her default name is Ana, and I am sticking with that, my niece is just over 1 and since she can say nana ( for banana) and Nan Nan I think she should be able to call Ana, Ana!

That is her full size is about 35 cm tall.  She is resting on Charlotte’s baby sofa.

A Close up of her Face! Isn’t the pattern face too cute! – Face is very simple to do too, just a few stitches!
