Would you hurt me if I said I hate Apple Products?

would-you-hurt-me-if-i-said-i-hate-apple-products

I’m not going into why, but iPads, iPhones and iPods not too mention any actual Mac would be in serious danger of being beaten up with a baseball bat in my presence. In my eyes the ubiquitous apple should have horns and a stingy tail not a chunk bitten out of it.  Anyhoo…

That didn’t stop me from wanting to make one of these iPhone Covers in Janelle Wind’s book “Pieces of Me”. There is a beautiful one in Janelle’s header and here is a link to another gorgeous one made by Bloom.

So we all know I am a bit of a dumb arse right?!

Right, well then it wouldn’t surprise you that I tried this 3 times before I was happy with it :(

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers from her Pieces of Me Book - Attempt 1 and Attempt 2

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers from her Pieces of Me Book - Attempt 1 and Attempt 2

Attempt 1

First off I read 3 and 3/4 inches, but I cut 4 and 3/4 inches, so I was off to a great start!

I forgot entirely to cut a square of fabric for the pocket lining (yes… clear as day in the instructions!)

I sewed my pocket onto the front piece with right sides facing, when it was supposed to be with the wrong side facing the right side.

I tried to make a frill using the method Janelle suggests but me and my bobbin threads, we aren’t friends… so I pleated instead.

It looks wonky, it is wonky… and I didnt’ like it.

Attempt 2

Slightly different mayhem to attempt 1

I repeated the dumb arse move with the pocket as per above… way to go learning from your mistakes Q!

Then when I ‘fixed’ it, I actually attached the frill to the wrong end, so the peeper bits (in attempt 2 they are the dotty fabric) so instead of pointing down they point up?!

The frill… still not friends with my bobbin threads :(

Also a bit wonky

I finally (on my third attempt) made one I am happy with (I am still not pleased that it will probably hold an Apple product, but Cest La Vie nou?

I ended up hand stitching the frill to get it right, and did not make most of the other goobie errors I made the first two times, my third time.

Janelle Wind Ipod Covers Attempt 3

Janelle Wind Ipod Cover Attempt 3

I still don’t know what is up with my camera, when I expect no flash (like above) it flashed and when I expect it to (like below) it doesn’t!

I’ve still been ill… so more and more hand stitching… I have been at my hexies for the Vignette Hexagon Quilt for a while now, but I also had one other hexie project (a little one!) that I wanted to try.  It’s the Hexagon Purse Pattern by The BirdHouse (link takes you to pattern  item at Cookies and Cream Craft).  The suggested size of hexies are 3/4 inch, but I have some 1/2 inch papers so thought I would try that.

Just so you know, I had not read about Myrtie until just before I posted this… You need to see her work here at Loft Creations!

Half Inch Hexies Nearly All Stitched Together

Half Inch Hexies Nearly All Stitched Together

That is a 6 by 6 inch cutting board but that is all I need for the pattern, so should have a finished product to show soon!

I have 48 completed hexagon flowers of the 140 required for the Vignette Hexagon Quilt. When I see all the pretty Hexies on the Vignette Hexagon Quilt blog I am really drawn to the fantastic colour coordinated ones.  My flowers are so far scrappy and I keep wanting to start over.  I have a serious scrappy fear I think…  Do you prefer scraps or colour coordinated lines?

The gaps will have white hexies with teeny stitcheries on them… here they are our lounge room rug.  Maybe when I get further down the track I can remove some of my scariest scraps and replace them with less scary ones?

Good Night Stitchers, where ever you are!

I did mention how I am going to marry the postman didn’t I?!

i-did-mention-how-i-am-going-to-marry-the-postman-didnt-i

Well today the love has increased exponentially and the next time he or she arrives I will be on bended knee :D

A few days ago I started cutting out fabric for Blocks 2 and 3 of Vignette in Stitches Mystery Block of the Month. I realised that my fat quarter bundle of  Sweet Broderie fabrics were 3 fat quarters short oops! I know that this was probably just a mistake on behalf of the store I purchased from, but I didn’t want to wait for too long to get a replacement, so I ordered the fat quarters from The Stitcher’s Cupboard in NSW.

That was one of the packages.

I have a new job to go to on the 23rd of May and also received a stack of paperwork from my new Employer, that I will carefully go and peruse after writing this blog.  Those of you who know how much of a nerd I am, understand how I love to fill out forms. I am sure there will be plenty to keep me happy for a few hours in that package. :D

I also ordered some self cover buttons for embellishments on the zippy purse that I am making for LeAnn in California, I received the buttons today and have now completed the purse, so here is sneak peek number 2 – Your purse will be in the mail by the end of this week LeAnn!

In my last post, I had a bit of a whine about an order that I placed to Pink Chalk fabrics that was accidentally mailed to someone else in Australia. I did receive a refund and purchased some different fabrics, but had given up hope of receiving my original order, today I did!  It was mailed from the recipient in Australia, who I can’t thank enough for forwarding it on. I am definitely going to send them a thank you!

Here is what I grabbed in the crazy Pink Chalk Mad March Sale!

And… my hanging kitchen towel mystery swap partner was Cheryll herself from Gone Stitching! I received these two towels along with yummy recipes! So that was package number 5 from the postie gotta love my day.  Incidentally, I have a bit of a sore throat and am a little grumpy and down today, so coming home to all these pressies was really quite wonderful!

Cheryll made an autumn themed towel and a fruity red towel, here is a close up

and here they are hanging on our oven.

And note the special little touch (they are on both towels) – appliqued Qs :D :D :D   A lot of companies that make insignia, name or initial products don’t even make Qs as there are not many with names who start with Q, so I went through a phase where I would buy anything and everything I found with a Q on it :D So I know Cheryll didn’t know this, but my Q towels really made me smile. Thank You!

Now you may have noticed that this is more about parcels in my letterbox than stitching, well here are my newest Hexies, just to prove I have touched needle and thread and my sewing machine (for finishing the zippy purse) recently.

Aside: Not sure why all my images are grainy all of a sudden, I must have accidentally taken my camera off dumb dumb mode, hopefully I am smart enough to figure out how to get it back there!

Hope all is well in your world!

Hexagon Craziness

hexagon-craziness

Yes I know you have heard it and seen it all before… All those different Hexagons everywhere.

Either you have started making them and you get it, or you just think, what is up with those crazy people?! I was crazy before, but I have added hexagon craziness to my list of symptoms.  It all started (well for me anyway) when I saw Vignette Issue 2 and this photo on Leanne’s blog.

(pic from Leanne’s House and copyright Leanne’s House)

There is a hexagon quilt project in it, with cute little stitcheries on hexagons between the hexagon flowers! We need 140 hexagon flowers in total. So it’s a bit of a stretch to imagine it completed, but I’m among fellow crazies!  We have gathered on a blog, the Vignette Hexagon Quilt blog started by Leanne of Lizzie the Quilter and Sarah of Sarah’s Prim Treasures (thanks lovely ladies!). Join in if you dare.. Mwah ha ha ha…

I currently have 15 completed hexagon flowers….

and I also have 5 basted, waiting to be stitched together and lots of roughly cut hexagons waiting to be basted.

Midweek Madness

midweek-madness

I have madness most days, so there is nothing really special about Midweek Madness, I just needed my title to be an alliteration for some reason and I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate. I have been in my sick bed for a few days, and only just ventured out this morning to witness a change of season.  It’s blustery and rainy out, quite out of character for Adelaide. I like rain, I don’t mind walking in it and getting (slightly wet) or totally wet, if I don’t have to sit for ages in the soaked clothes.  I would jump in more puddles if it were more socially acceptable and the idea of kissing (like real smooching) someone I care about in the pouring rain is totally awesome :)

But it’s still unusual for Adelaide.

When I dragged myself out of bed this morning I added the sashing strips to my Endless Summer project (maybe slightly appropriate considering the weather change). As usual my corner posts do not line up with my blocks. I did toy with the idea of unpicking them and attempting to get them to line up closer than they do, but I don’t really want to. I hope that my accuracy will get better and better the more sewing I do, and that ultimately when I attempt quilts like this one, all the dooflickeys will match and the points will touch and everything will look lovely.  Today I decided to channel someone I heard at the Adelaide Craft Show last year (her name escapes me, but I know she designs fabric for a Japanese company and that her first 2 books which the publisher won’t let her re-print for some reason, sells for mucho mega bucks when selling on ebay). The quote I remember was “pick busy prints and you won’t notice when your points don’t line up”. Unfortunately my white on white print with green cornerstones do not fit into the busy prints category. I am leaving this one to, I’m learning and I won’t be perfect for a while yet, and (hey deal with it Q!) I may never be perfect.

Endless Summer Sashed

Endless Summer Sashed

There is a thin inner border and wider outer border that will get added before the top is finished. (Actually the sashing doesn’t look as bad as it is in the photo). Trust me, it’s bad!

I haven’t done much other sewing as I have been hiding and feeling sorry for myself in bed, but I did add to my hexagon flowers.  You can do them in bed!

The last one still has two unstitched seams, but I thought it wanted its own photo anyway!

Also, I introduced my sister-in-law Rachel’s blog the other day, well Rachel has a new dolly on her website. This one was made for her sister Chantel who has Angelman’s Syndrome and she talks about her wonderfully brilliant idea about doll’s -for-the-rest-of-us-. Go look at Rachel’s latest post and read about the new dolly!

Saturday Stitch and Play

saturday-stitch-and-play

Realising that my blog should come with a warning (and I will be expanding on this, I have decided to put up some permanent signage).  If you are not from Australia, these signs are of constant amusement to tourists in fact you can buy them as fridge magnets, tea towels, oven mitts, mouse mats almost anything in souvenir shops and even places locals shop.

My personal favourite is the little wombat. Actually, not so little and if you make them angry you had better watch out. I think they are cute anyhow. So there are similar signs that people stick in their car windows. I think it’s supposed to help us drive better when we realise that there is a little person in their car.  It’s supposed to be a warning to hooligans.

So you get the idea right, it’s shaped like a road sign, and it warns people.

I thought I needn’t go all scary with the yellow and black, it’s only a blog right? but I do think you need to be warned so here is mine…

Dummy Quilter on Blog

Dummy Quilter on Blog

I will be adding a page, explaining and warning others not to do the dummy quilting things I do!

So I don’t (well I have once or twice, but I didn’t last night) do Friday night sew ins, because unlike most of you, I need to be in bed and sleeping by some early hour I won’t mention, because I am embarrassed about having no energy to even sew.  I did get some stitching done today though.

First up, I would like to show you (well I actually did do this on Friday night … part of it anyway) my very first hexagon flower! I know, I know… not another person doing hexies! Well I wanted to try and when I read about using the new Sewline Glue Pen (in Vignette Issue 2) instead of tacking, I grabbed my Sewline pen and my Hexagon pieces and gave it a go.  My first attempt failed didn’t succeed as well as I would have liked. I had some directional pieces as the petal hexagons and when I was done sewing, they made no sense, so I unpicked 3 of them last night and restitched them, so they do make sense.

My First 1inch Hexie Paper Pieced Flower

My First 1inch Hexie Paper Pieced Flower

This morning I followed the well written instructions in the Endless Summer pattern and completed sewing block 1 (or star 1).

I continued chain piecing the rest , I just did the first one step by step to make sure I got it. Later in the day I felt like I needed a break and heard my brother and his wife talk about going to a national park close by, so I chucked some stitching into a bag and headed off with them to the national park. My parents and the family puppy Peppa joined us. I stitched a bit lying on the grass, it was a really nice Autumn day, not to hot and perfect in the shade. Wouldn’t you like to be sitting on the grass stitching, right here?

In addition there was my favourite person in the whole world.

I know one pic of her, is just not enough, so here are two more.

And did I mention the family puppy?! Peppa is an English Staffordshire Terrier and is about 3 years old ( I think). My parents adopted her from a breeder, she was a breeding mummy, but had problems after her first litter.  My parents got her soon after their last dog passed away. Sindy was the first Staffie we had had and after her, can’t even think about other breeds.  They are both the kindest gentlest doggies ever. Peppa is a bit easier to photograph, Sindy was petrified of cameras, so it’s fun to be able to take nice photos of Peppa.  She is very attached to my dad so didn’t hang out with me for too long but I snapped this while she was sitting with me.

Peppa

Peppa

She looks like she could be mean, but she is the biggest softie you could meet.

That was the break I needed from my machine and when I got back home I went straight back to getting Endless Summer sorted out. Whilst ironing the blocks after completion, I noticed one error and then went on with my life… only to pick it up again and consider unpicking it and re-stitching the block.  I ironed a couple more blocks and decided that because I had the patience and wasn’t feeling too uptight about my mistake I would re-stitch it.

So I took it apart and then started to re-position only to realise that the block I had just unpicked, was in actual fact not wrong but right… I had picked up the wrong block to unpick. (Hence my dummy quilter on blog warning sign)  So I unpicked the right wrong block (I had to write that sorry :P ) and stitched them both back together (correctly)

The Correct Endless Summer Block, Accidentally Unpicked :( doh!

The Correct Endless Summer Block, Accidentally Unpicked :( doh!

I finished all the nine star blocks, and have now started to add the sashing, but because the Dummy Quilter on Blog idea was going around in my head, I had to play on the puter a bit first.  Here are the blocks, in pattern order sans sashing. I think I should finish the top tomorrow, which gives me just over a week to quilt it for the parade.  The last 2 months I just sent pics of the top, but I would like to have this quilted before I send my photo to Sherri and Sinta.

So an awesome Saturday stitching and playing. Hope yours was awesome too!
