I love cats, we have two British Shorthair furbabies ourselves, and live in a house with an additional furbaby Maine Coon kitten as well as the local neighbourhood stray (we think) who visits at regular intervals for attention cuddles and food. My niece Charlotte recently turned 7 and she loves cats too. The Maine Coon kitten is part of her family. She also likes stuffed cats and digital cats. She is particularly fond of a digital cat persona Mr Stampy Cat a YouTube video maker who makes videos in Minecraft as Stampy Cat. When I started this project, I new the angled retro block designs in the quilt did lend itself to minecraft style cats, but I didn’t really think Charlotte would liken her pillow gift to Stampy. I chose the ginger colour scheme, as she is also fond of ginger cats, (probably Stampy related!)
Charlotte’s mum brought the super cute pattern by Elizabeth Hartman to my attention and since I only acquired it a few days before Charlotte’s birthday I thought a quick pillow might be a good idea. I chose to use the blocks named Daisy and Mr Snuggles, Daisy is the 3rd kitten from the left in Elizabeth’s image above and Mr Snuggles is the 4th. I changed part of Mr Snuggles face to white.
The instructions are very clear and I found the blocks came together quite quickly. I used Prima HomeSpun quilting solids in white, coffee bean (eyes and nose), Aussie gold and pumpkin and a grey spotted blender for my background.
I came very close to running out of the grey spotted fabric (I used one fat quarter), so I had to get creative when adding extra pieces to the top and bottom of the kitten blocks (see top right of my Mr Snuggles block). The quilt blocks themselves go to the top of the kitten’s ears and the bottom of their chin, I added extra to the sides and top to fit my cushion insert that I had purchased which was 30.5cmX30.5cm.
I add batting and quilted each cushion side separately using serpentine stitch on the background and echoing the seams in the kitten’s faces with my “looks like hand quilting” stitch on my Brother.
I added some piping which I made up in a lighter grey polka dot blender and then presented the pillow to Charlotte on her birthday. Happily she thought it looked like her favourite Stampy cat!
