Mostly I talk about crafty type things on my blog. I don’t tend to delve into personal things, work stuff or family stuff (much). I have several Quilting UFO (unfinished object) and Miniature or Doll Projects that are in an incomplete or WIP (work in progress) state. My biggest UFO has and always will be myself. So I am also going to start talking about health, fitness and in my particular case losing weight. Most of the time when I read about people who are commencing a weight loss or fitness journey, they spend a lot of time introducing us to why and how they got to the starting point. A lot of that is usually a little whiney. I don’t want to do that and am not going to tell you what I did before to try to lose, weight, what my weight has been ove the years, what illness or conditions I have that have messed with my chances to lose weight and be fit and healthy — blah blah blah. [Please don’t take my not wanting to do that as an indication that others’ shouldn’t, I know that there are a lot of very valid reasons and very tough obstacles that prevent all of us from being the best we can health wise at any given time]. I have had hurdles, I do have health issues and I have a few attempts and fails under my belt, but in the grand scheme of things, none of them have been that debilitating and my struggles to overcome them are not really large struggles relative to what some people have to face. In other words… little bit of a first world whiney pants issue.
I am going to eventually bamboozle you with pretty pictures charts and all the like, while I talk about what I am doing to lose weight and get fit and healthly; but I haven’t gotten around to completing all the work required to do that yet, so I thought I would add some of the photos I took recently of some flora in the Wittunga Botanical Gardens when I was there for a picnic. Why not show you pictures of hot models with perfect bodies or athletes with lean muscles in bikinis frolicing at the beach? Well I think it’s fine to want to improve your health and fitness and physique, but it’s also super important to be realistic about what can be achieved. I am not going to get any taller no matter how hard I try, and I have an hour glass shape and am 5ft2.5 there is no way I will ever be a slim rectangle that looks fantastic in skinny jeans and there is no way that my hips or boobs are ever going to be a similar size to my waist, no matter how big I get there is always pretty much about 25cm difference between those measurements and my waist. I want to have defined muscles but unless I am prepared to train very hard and have a very strict diet to get my bodyfat % super low I am never going to be ‘cut’. So look pretty flowers…
I chose to start attending meetings at weight watchers, there is a meeting near my work at lunch times on Thursdays. I also decided that I would like to learn how to run so I bought an app for my phone called Zombies, Run 5K Training it is like a Couch to 5K training program and provides an 8 week program to get you to a point of running for 30 minutes at a time. A week ago I also added the Les Mills Pump at home 90 Day Program to my exercise schedule. So far I have been making changes for 8 weeks and I have lost a total of 4.6kg an average of about 0.6kg per week. I am quite happy with this rate of losing, I have more energy am eating well without excluding any food and my cardio fitness has definitely improved.
Why now? Well why not really, any time you feel ready is good to start. I didn’t want to start on the first of a month or on a Monday or whenever, I wanted to start period. So I did. There are lots of moments where I felt unhappy about my health, my fitness, my body and a few anecdotes I could talk about that sparked my decision. I think those types of things probably happen all along, but at some point they hurt too much or you feel it in a different way so it changes things.
Everyone wants a secret or a definitive way to lose weight… Well it’s been staring everyone in the face for a long long time and all it takes is a little common sense to figure it out. You need to eat less or exercise more or both, to get smaller. You need to be able to continue to do this forever, you can never go back, because if you eat more and exercise less, then you will reverse all the work you did to get there. So even though I am using weight watchers meetings and program, an android app to run and a series of dvds and some weights to work out. Anything that I could have chosen that would mean eating less and exercising more will work. Telling you about it is going to help me too.
Good Night, Wherever you are.
